It’s important as well to remember that it’s “people, not algorithms” sharing this stuff. The unprecedented nature of the footage - livestreamed, high definition, horrifically graphic - and its inherent newsworthiness meant that a cross section of trolls, curious onlookers and even some media organizations felt inclined to repost the footage in the immediate aftermath. The Christchurch video is potentially more complicated for the big tech platforms. Last year, Twitter announced it had suspended 1.2 million terrorist accounts since 2015. And, in many respects, the companies already do this. That’s all to say that the platforms are well within their right to impose harsh bans on those who upload and attempt to disseminate terroristic propaganda.
It’s frequently lost in Big Tech’s free-speech debates that every user of most of these platforms has entered into an agreement to abide by that company’s rules of conduct, and in doing so has granted the companies broad, sweeping permission to suspend or permanently remove offending users and content.
